Sand rocks, specifically sand rocks on the hi-line in Montana have got to be the best type of rock.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day they say. The cows would agree, they are a big fan of breakfast as well.

It’s been a warm winter in Montana this year. The hills are bare of snow and there’s been even a few mornings feeding cows where it’s dusty. This is the first time I can recall fixing fence in February, folks south of town I heard were building fence in January. There isn’t much of a frost line, if at all. Here’s a couple photos of those dusty mornings.

A cold morning and a clear day, the kind that makes you slow down and notice the quiet.

Moving calves home from the homestead where they’ll stay for the winter. The draws are still hanging onto a little green, and the hills are quiet except for the sound of hooves and a cow calling for her calf. One horse works the bottom with me, another’s up on the ridge, ensuring the bunch stay pointed south. Everyone just doing their part.

It’s the kind of day that doesn’t ask for much, just an afternoon of moving critters to the holding pasture. Same country, same wind, same kind of people doing what needs done, not work, just another day.

The western way’s never been about looking perfect, but there sure is beauty in imperfection. There’s a quiet sort of peace in the subtle little mishaps that take place every single time these critters are moved.

Morning light and a little dust in the air. The day starts early when calves need brought in to be sold later that day.

By the time the sun hits full, the corrals are red with dust and light. A calf stands turned the wrong way, just watching. There’s always one.

It’s the kind that shapes your days and keeps you honest. Blessed everyday.

Reba and Levi had to put up with one more photo session and boy, we had so much fun. I should have been taking notes from our creative director on this one, really spurred things along nicely. It’s a strange and thankfully an uncommon scene to see cattle being trailed through a grain crop. While the pastures seem to have gotten a much needed drink this summer, the grain wasn’t as fortunate. On my story the other day I called this photo “Insurance Crop”.

Dad has a saying about raising kids and free labor that I’ll keep off of Instagram. Instead I’ll comment about how grateful I am that it has never crossed my mind that I can’t do anything a man can. I credit that to the strong men and women in the agriculture community I was raised in. It’s a blessing to have this “blind confidence”, as I like to call it, from anything agriculture to mining. When I was still traveling for work a lot, my camera, with all of my photos from the previous 4 years was taken out of my checked bag. This is one of the handful I saved, and the one I chose for June on the calendar. Mistakes are only mistakes if you don’t learn anything from them. I am grateful that this instance taught me a few good life lessons, that hopefully I’ll only have to learn once.
